John Guidetti struck a first-half hat-trick to help in-form Feyenoord defeat high-flying FC Twente, who slumped to only their second league defeat of the season despite a valiant second-half fightback.

Guidetti netted in the eighth, 43rd and 44th minutes to put Feyenoord in control and although Twente hit back with goals from Nacer Chadli and Luuk de Jong it was not enough to deny the home side as they sealed a 3-2 victory.

Feyenoord have now taken 13 points from a possible 15 in the last few weeks and they move to within two points of third-placed Twente, who saw their 11-match unbeaten Eredivisie run come to an end.

Feyenoord took the lead with the first decent opportunity of the match as Guidetti made the most of some good work down the right by Otman Bakkal to slot in at the near post. Feyenoord survived a scare in the 20th minute when Ola John spurned an opportunity to draw Twente level, but the hosts could consider themselves unlucky not have gone 2-0 up moments later.

A quickly-taken free-kick left Karim El Ahmadi one-on-one with Nikolay Mihaylov but the Twente goalkeeper was able to save and from the loose ball Bakkal smashed a 20-yard effort against the post.

Mihaylov produced another save to keep out a Guidetti header in the 41st minute, but there was no denying the Swedish teenager two minutes later as he made it 2-0, firing a shot in off the near post following a rapid Feyenoord counter-attack.

And less than a minute later the 19-year-old was celebrating his hat-trick as he cut inside his marker before firing in a left-footed shot from the edge of the area.

That looked to be game for Feyenoord, but Twente stormed back after the break to give the home side a big scare. After Mihaylov had prevented Bakkal making it 4-0, Twente started to dominate and they pulled a goal back in the 56th minute when Chadli fired in from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

Twente made it 3-2 ten minutes later with a fine individual effort from De Jong and, with almost a third of the match left, the visitors must have felt optimistic about getting something out of the game. However, they could not find an equaliser as Feyenoord held on for the points.
