Ajax fightback seals VVV draw

Ajax battled back from a  two goal deficit to earn a share of the points from their trip to VVV-Venlo today.

A second-half double from Ahmed Musaab put VVV in charge and on course to inflict a first defeat of the season on reigning champions Ajax, but the visitors struck twice inside a minute to salvage a 2-2 draw.

Theo Janssen pulled a goal back in the 68th minute before Kolbeinn Sigthorsson levelled things up almost immediately after. Ajax now have seven points from their three games, while VVV have two points.

Ajax started the game strongly and almost went ahead in the 19th minute when Christian Eriksen's 25-yard free-kick cleared the wall before flying just inches wide of the right-hand post.

Two minutes later Ajax had another opening and Derk Boerrigter might feel he should have done better, the striker smashing his shot into the side-netting following good work down the right by Daley Blind.

Ajax came even closer in the 28th minute when Toby Alderweireld saw his header clip the left-hand post after getting on the end of Janssen's deep cross.

VVV briefly threatened through Robert Cullen before Ajax fashioned - and spurned - another chance in the 34th minute, this time Miralem Sulejmani spooning the ball over after a great through-ball from Siem De Jong.

Those missed chances looked set to cost Ajax dearly as VVV scored twice in the opening 15 minutes of the second half to snatch a 2-0 lead.

Michael Uchebo was put away by Barry Maguire and although his lofted effort over out-rushing goalkeeper Kenneth Vermeer lacked power, Musaab rushed in to tap the ball into an empty net, breaking the deadlock in the 47th minute.

Musaab then made it 2-0 in the 59th minute, picking the ball up on the edge of the area before smashing home a great finish. It was looking bad for Ajax at that point, but within 11 minutes they were back on level terms.

The visitors pulled a goal back following a great run by Eriksen, who raced almost the whole length of the pitch before reaching the VVV area, where he fed the ball to Janssen, who struck a powerful left-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Ajax had barely finished celebrating that goal when they got the equaliser. Alderweireld stole possession before his low cross found Sigthorsson in front of goal and he could not miss from close range.
