Heerenveen tops Twente in Dutch Cup

First division side Heerenveen claimed their maiden Dutch Cup victory after a thrilling final with Twente that was forced to a penalty shoot-out.

After the match finished 1-1 the teams, could not be separated after 30 minutes of extra-time, by which point Youssouf Hersi's 117th minute goal for Twente had levelled the scores to 2-2, after Bonaventure Kalou's effort three minutes earlier.

The match went to a penalty shoot-out with Heerenveen emerging the victor, beating former England manager Steve McLaren's side 5-4.

Heerenveen, who are based in Friesland, were beaten Dutch Cup finalists in 1993 and 1997.
