Club America, Atlas maintain strong starts

Club America and Atlas kept up their strong starts to the Torneo Apertura with high-scoring wins on Saturday night.

Raul Jimenez scored a hat-trick for Club America as they saw off Puebla 4-0 for their third successive win to open the season. He opened the scoring in the 16th minute, added a penalty shortly after the hour mark and, after Mexico striker Oribe Peralta added the third, completed his treble in the 76th minute. Paolo Goltz was sent off in the last minute but it was far too late to spoil his side's day.

Atlas are two points behind in the fledgling league table after a 4-2 win over Chiapas, who led twice in the first half through Vicente Vuoso and Emiliano Armenteros. Atlas equalised on each occasion through Arturo Gonzalez and Rodrigo Millar and won the game with second-half goals from Luis Caballero and Enrique Esqueda.

There were also goals galore for Leon, though they waited until the second half before Yarmislon Rivera, Carlos Pena, Jose Cardenas and Miguel Sabah earned them a 4-0 success against Morelia.

Cruz Azul and Veracruz each had a man sent off late in their 0-0 draw, substitute Anibal Zurdo Rodriguez for the hosts and Leobardo Lopez for Veracruz.

Santos Laguna's Nestor Calderon Rodriguez had been on the field only six minutes before being dismissed in the last minute as their clash with Monterrey also finished goalless - the first points dropped by Monterrey this season.

Toluca claimed their first win of the season as they beat Unam Pumas 2-1. Pablo Velazquez put Toluca ahead with a 27th-minute penalty but Matias Britos levelled the scores just two minutes later.

Edgar Benitez was sent off for the home side on the stroke of half-time but that did not stop them claiming victory with Velazquez netting the second ten minutes from time.
