Reigning champions Leon suffered defeat in their opening game of the new Torneo Apertura. They went down 2-1 at home to Club America, whose tally of 11 titles in their history sees them share the league's all-time record with Guadalajara.

Osvaldo Martinez opened the scoring and the second was given as an own goal by goalkeeper William Yarbrough, with Mauro Boselli's late penalty mere consolation.

Pachuca held on to beat Cruz Azul 1-0 despite finishing the game with nine men. Matias Alustiza scored in the 12th minute and though Jorge Hernandez was sent off with 20 minutes remaining and Daniel Arreola followed seven minutes later, the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.

Monterrey beat Universidad de Guadalajara 3-1. Humberto Suazo's early free-kick was cancelled out by Andres Rios but second-half goals from Cesar Delgado and Dorlan Pabon secured victory.

Andres Renteria earned Santos Laguna a 1-0 win away to Veracruz while Atlas and Tigres Monterrey drew 0-0, with Marco Ruben sent off for Tigres.
