Brazilian striker Marquinhos has quit J.League first division side Vegalta Sendai citing trauma caused by the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, club officials today.

"It was a great shock for him to actually see the disasters caused by the earthquake and it is mentally difficult for him to keep playing. That's why we cancelled the contract with him," said a statement on the club's website.

Marquinhos, whose real name is Marcos Gomes de Araujo, has played for six different Japanese first division clubs since 2001, and scored 109 goals in 230 games. He had planned to return for the 23 April reopening of the Japanese league which has seen games suspended because of the 11 March disaster.
