Massimiliano Allegri has expressed his delight at seeing AC Milan top the Serie A standings, and praised the exceptional strike that took them there last night. Andrea Pirlo scored the only goal of their game at Parma with a breathtaking 35-yard drive to take I Rossoneri one point clear of Inter Milan, who play their game in hand at home to Juventus later today.
“It is very nice to see the table right now,” Allegri told Sky Italia. “The important thing was to win tonight, as it was crucial for the table and our self-esteem. The team did very well, created a lot of scoring opportunities and were resolute when Parma came out of their shell.
“I think we dropped the tempo a little at times in the second half, but it’s understandable that we wouldn’t be able to keep up our early pace for the entire 90 minutes. We must learn to kill games off though.”
Allegri fielded a diamond formation at the Stadio Tardini, with Ronaldinho and Robinho supporting lead striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic from out wide, and Clarence Seedorf in a more advanced central midfield role.
“I was pleased with the way my side utilised the diamond this evening and given that it led to our first win on the road this term, it certainly worked for us on the night,” said the Milan coach. “I think Ronaldinho did well, especially when we managed to go on a quick counter.”
Allegri applauds Pirlo gem
The Brazilian was nevertheless guilty of missing one great chance to score, while the usually infallible Ibrahimovic was denied by Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante on mutilple occasions. Fortunately for them, Pirlo, who registered just one league goal in the previous two seasons, produced a moment of genius guaranteed to decorate highlight reels for years to come.
“It was a wonderful goal, one of the best I’ve seen,” said the 43-year-old Allegri, before joking: “Mind you, when I was a player, the ball was much heavier!”
Seven teams could knock Milan off the summit today. Pirlo will just hope it’s not the team they bought him from in 2001; something which would require a Juve win in the Derby d’Italia.
