Markus Weinzierl was today appointed the new coach of Bundesliga side Augsburg. Last season, 37-year-old Weinzierl succeeded in getting Bavarian club SSV Jahn Regensburg promoted to the German second tier.

He replaces Dutchman Jos Luhukay, who oversaw Augsburg's promotion to the top flight for the first time in the club's history and then guided them to a 14th-place finish in their inaugural Bundesliga campaign last season.

Luhukay, 48, stepped down on 5 May after declaring that he felt he had completed his mission by keeping Augsburg in the top division.
