Hannover maintained their unbeaten home record this season, but were held to a goalless draw by Freiburg at the Niedersachsenstadion.
Chances were few and far between in a lacklustre game which left Freiburg the happier of the two sides since the point was enough to guarantee survival. Hannover consolidated seventh position, but still need one more win to be certain of a place in the UEFA Europa League next season.
Lars Stindl made his return to the Hannover side after a lengthy injury absence, and it was almost a dream comeback for the midfielder. He got into the path of a mishit Christian Pander shot and was left with only Oliver Baumann to beat, but the Freiburg goalkeeper came out on top.
Freiburg, though, were looking to continue their impressive recent form and adopted a shoot-on-sight policy which saw Cedric Makiadi and Jan Rosenthal both miss the target from outside the penalty area.
Emanuel Pogatetz blocked from around the penalty spot from Anton Putsila early in the second half, but Hannover instantly had a chance at the other end with Didier Ya Konan side-stepping Baumann on the edge of the area, but the Freiburg goalkeeper recovered to block the Ivorian's shot.
Pogatetz twice sent headers wide of the post from corners as the home side tried in vain to make the breakthrough. Freiburg were happy to hold on for a point and there were tears of joy in the eyes of their coach Christian Streich when the final whistle sounded, confirming their place among Germany's top 18 clubs next season.
