Abidal told to explain absence

Monaco coach Claudio Ranieri has asked defender Eric Abidal to explain his absence from Sunday's match against Lille after the player left the stadium without permission.

The former Barcelona player was not named in the squad for the fixture, which ended in a 1-1 draw, and left the Stade Louis II before kick-off - much to the annoyance of Ranieri. Abidal has not played for Monaco since the 9 February match against Paris St Germain, largely due to illness.

However, Ranieri confirmed the player is back to full fitness and now wants to know why Abidal went home. "He came with us (to the stadium) and then he left," the Italian told L'Equipe.

"He was not on the bench. He had trained all day on Saturday but I preferred to choose another player. It was a sporting decision. He is fit, he had a good week of training, I just picked someone else. I know he went home. He did not stay for the match. I want to know why he left."

Ranieri also denied suggestions of a rift between the coach and the player, saying: "There's no problem. It's his problem, not mine. If there is a problem I will discuss it with the club."
