FA to probe Williamson challenge

Newcastle defender Mike Williamson's challenge on Bolton striker Johan Elmander is to be investigated by the Football Association in a move that could see the Magpies man suspended.

The FA said today they were looking into the incident, which happened during Bolton's 5-1 Premier League win at home to Newcastle on Saturday.

"We will be looking at the footage and establishing firstly if the referee saw it and secondly, if he didn't, whether he would have shown a red card if he had," an FA spokesman said.

FIFA World Cup™ final referee Howard Webb, who later sent off Fabricio Coloccini for elbowing Elmander, took no action over the incident.

Should Williamson be charged and subsequently found guilty of an offence, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton would find himself without both his first-choice central defenders for the league match against champions Chelsea at St James' Park this coming Saturday.
