Cruzeiro retained their seven-point advantage at the top of the Campeonato standings with a 1-0 away win over Goias.
Marcelo Martins' goal after 25 minutes was all they needed for their third win in a row.
Second-placed Sao Paulo kept pace as Alexandre Pato's late goal gave them a 2-1 win over Santos. The hosts had led since Chagas Ganso's goal in the 24th minute, but seemed to have blown it when Gabriel Barbosa was able to level from the penalty spot in the 86th minute.
However, Pato bailed his team out with the winner two minutes later, moving them into second above Internacional - who lost 1-0 to Atletico Mineiro on Saturday - and Corinthians, who went down 2-1 to Gremio.
Hernan Barcos scored two in the space of five minutes at the start of the second half to put Gremio in control, and Corinthians could not find an equaliser despite Paolo Guerrero's 62nd minute strike. The frustration eventually told with Guerrero dismissed in stoppage time.
Fluminense are now two points behind Corinthians in fifth after enjoying a 4-0 rout of Sport Recife. Santos Cicero opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Fred added a second just before half-time. The goals continued with Dario Conca's strike five minutes into the second half before Fred's second wrapped it up 10 minutes from time.
Two late goals gave Flamengo a 2-0 away win over Criciuma, with Lucas Mugni getting the first from the penalty spot in the 78th minute before Eduardo added a second three minutes later.
Stum Everaldo's 74th minute goal gave Figueirense a 1-0 win away to Vitoria, while Atletico Paranaense and Bahia played out a goalless draw.
