Goals from Fred and substitute Francisco Chiquinho in either half made it three wins in four for Fluminense, bouncing back from their 2-1 defeat to Vitoria last week, but it was not enough to reclaim top spot from Internacional after they beat Atletico Paranaense on Saturday.
At the opposite end of the table Figueirense suffered their fourth straight defeat as Santos won 2-0 at the Orlando Scarpelli stadium. Gabriel Barbosa opened the scoring just before half time, with Marcos Arouca sealing the win just after the hour mark, but it was not all plain sailing for the visitors who had Neuciano Cicinho sent off for a second booking in the closing stages.
Bahia climbed to fourth after their 1-1 draw with Vitoria, thanks to goals from Anderson Negao and Rodrigo Souza, as Cruzeiro went down to nine men and slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Atletico Mineiro. Marcelo Moreno gave Cruzeiro the lead just before the break, but everything went wrong after that as Silva Marion and De Souza Andre turned the match around before Michel Luan and goalscorer Moreno both saw straight reds in the last 15 minutes.
Hernan Barcos bagged a brace to secure a 2-1 win for Gremio at Chapecoense, with substitute Martins Tiago Luis pulling back a late consolation for the hosts, as the visitors moved into seventh.
In Sunday's other games, Sporting Recife won 1-0 away at Coritiba, with Francisco Rithiely Rithely grabbing the winner, while Clemente Luis Fabiano's late equaliser earned Sao Paulo a 1-1 draw after Conserva Fagner had put Corinthians in front just after the break.
