River Plate made it 10 points from four games at the start of the new Torneo Apertura with a 3-0 win over Defensa y Justicia on Wednesday.

Carlos Sanchez scored twice in the first half and Teofilo Gutierrez rounded off victory with 13 minutes remaining.

Newell's Old Boys held off a second-half fightback from Atletico Rafaela to remain unbeaten. Ruben Rodriguez and Leandro Fernandez scored early on and Adrian Bastia's own goal gave Newell's a 3-0 lead with little more than half an hour played. Joel Sacks pulled a goal back and Sergio Vittor's 84th-minute strike put the result in the balance but Atletico could not find an equaliser.

Godoy Cruz won 1-0 at Rosario Central in a match which saw both teams have a man sent off. Sebastian Abreu's 40th-minute dismissal put Rosario at a disadvantage but if Godoy's plan centred on making use of the extra man, it was quickly rendered moot as Luis Jerez was sent off just a minute after the resumption. Nevertheless, Ruben Ramirez scored in the 69th minute to earn the three points for the visitors.

Estudiantes beat Boca Juniors 3-1 after a storming first-half performance. Joaquin Correa struck five minutes in and Diego Vera netted twice before the interval to set up victory, with Jonathan Calleri's late consolation merely incidental.
