Colon Santa Fe hung on to top spot in the Argentinian Clausura as Velez Sarsfield and Estudiantes dropped points on Wednesday.
A draw with Godoy Cruz on Tuesday night left Colon Santa Fe vulnerable but neither Velez Sarsfield nor Estudiantes were able to take advantage.
Velez Sarsfield's hopes were dashed in the more dramatic fashion as they lost 4-1 at Newell's Old Boys, finishing with 10 men to add insult to injury.
Veteran defender Gabriel Heinze opened the scoring for the hosts on the stroke half-time and two minutes after the interval Milton Casco doubled their lead. Cristian Diaz then made it 3-0 in the 55th minute.
Roberto Nanni pulled one back in the 79th minute, but moments later Facundo Cardozo collected a second yellow card, and Victor Figueroa scored a late fourth for the hosts to keep Velez Sarsfield three points off the pace.
Estudiantes missed their chance as they were held to a draw by Belgrano Cordoba.
Cesar Pereyra scored an 88th minute penalty for the hosts to deny Estudiantes, who had led through Roman Martinez's 72nd minute goal.
The result leaves Estudiantes two points from the summit with 11 points from six games.
Boca Juniors recorded only their second win of the season as they saw off Olimpo 2-0 with second-half goals from Juan Sanchez Mino and Juan Riquelme, the second an 85th minute penalty.
Fernando Barrientos' 28th minute goal was enough for Lanus to beat Racing Club 1-0.
