On 19 January Steffi Jones, the President of the Organising Committee (OC) for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™, accompanied by a FIFA delegation, will travel to Nigeria to continue the Welcome Tour of the 15 nations joining hosts Germany at this summer’s competition.
In the country’s capital Abuja, the head of the OC will welcome the Super Falcons, winners of the CAF African Women's Championship back in October/November in South Africa, to the first edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup to be held on German soil. As well as passing on important information concerning stadiums and host cities to the Nigerian delegation, during the course of an informal evening gathering, Jones is also scheduled to meet with the German ambassador to Nigeria, Joachim Schmillen.
“Our Welcome Tour began very well with our two stops in Australia and New Zealand, and it gave us the opportunity to highlight Germany’s desire to be a friendly and open host nation,” said Jones. “I’m really looking forward to my first trip to Nigeria. After all, we’re talking about the leading side in African women’s football.”
Around 150 guests from the fields of sport, politics and the media, among them former Eintracht Frankfurt, Bolton Wanderers and Nigeria legend Jay Jay Okocha, are expected to attend the event Abuja. The fourth stage of the Welcome Tour will take place in England on 27 January.
