Wolfsburg has a good chance of Host City status for the FIFA
Women's World Cup 2011, the German Football Association (DFB) has
acknowledged. "We want the World Cup to be a nationwide event,
and Wolfsburg would represent northern Germany. This is a firm
prediction, provided the city fulfils the technical, organisational
and commercial requirements," declared DFB General Secretary
Wolfgang Niersbach at a DFB live event in Hanover last Friday.
The DFB has previously indicated a preference for Berlin and
Frankfurt as venues for the Opening Match and Final respectively.
In Hanover, former Germany international Britta Carlson was named a
member of Organising Committee (OC) President Steffi Jones' team of
ambassadors. The VfL Wolfsburg midfielder will promote the 2011
event in and around the north and north-east of the country.
FIFA and the OC will jointly determine the tournament match
schedule, with final decisions likely in autumn 2008.
