Edmonton’s favourite heroes from 11 years ago – including 2002 FIFA U-20 World Cup all-stars Erin McLeod, Carmelina Moscato and Christine Sinclair – led Canada to a 3-0 victory over Korea Republic in a Wednesday Women’s International Friendly match at Commonwealth Stadium.

The heroes were part of a Canadian XI that returned “home” for a memorable - yet cold - night of international football. Christine Sinclair scored the winning goal and was named Player of the Match.

The City of Edmonton is an Official Host City to both the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Canada 2014 as well as the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. Eleven years ago, it was a Host City to the inaugural FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (then known as the FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship) when Canada won silver and captured the hearts of a nation.

Since 2002, Canada national 'A' squad has now played three times at Commonwealth Stadium, including a pair of wins in which Sinclair has scored both times. McLeod and Moscato were both starting for their first time in Edmonton at 'A' level, with both helping Canada post a clean sheet against Korea Republic in the 30 October match.

Joining Sinclair, McLeod and Moscato in the Wednesday match, second-half sub Robyn Gayle was another alumni from that Canada 2002 silver-medal team. Meanwhile, both goalkeepers McLeod and Stephanie Labbe, who split the duties, call Edmonton home.
