Boxing world champion Wladimir Klitschko and tennis legend Boris Becker went head to head on Tuesday 20 October 2009. Not in the boxing ring or even on a tennis court, but at the Carl-Benz Stadium in Mannheim, and all in support of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
Germany 2011 ambassadors Renate Lingor and Silke Rottenberg joined 'Team Klitschko', while current Germany internationals Birgit Prinz and Nadine Angerer turned out for the victorious 'Team Becker' in an exciting game of football.
The game also gave the ambassadors a chance to discuss the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011™ in Germany. "Wladimir Klitschko and Boris Becker are both huge football fans and they're really pleased to see that Germany will once again be hosting a World Cup," said Lingor. "It's a wonderful opportunity for sporting role models like ourselves to tackle some difficult social issues and to help children and young people enjoy a better life," added Rottenberg.
The Laureus benefit match also saw the appearances of a number of former stars including Thomas Hassler, Mario Basler, Fredi Bobic, Guido Buchwald and Maurizio Gaudino. Joining them were a host of personalities from the world of sport such as former handball pro Stefan Kretschmar, boxing world champion Felix Sturm and beach volleyball star Jonas Reckermann - who hit a hat-trick. In the end it was 'Team Becker' who came out on top, defeating ‘Team Klitschko' in an enthralling 6-4 victory.
The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was founded in 2000 and its objective is to use sport as a vehicle to invoke social change. Currently, the Laureus initiative supports 70 projects in 38 different countries.
