Two of the leading nations in the women’s game go to the mat on 29 October 2009 in Augsburg, when Germany entertain  the USA. Following on from the Germans’ meeting with the highly-skilled Brazilians in April this year, coach Silvia Neid’s team now cross swords with the Olympic gold-medal winners.

The USA, twice FIFA Women’s World Cup™ winners and three-time Olympic champions, rate as one of the most successful nations in the history of women’s football. “There’s no avoiding the USA. They have an extremely strong team, and they’re always there or thereabouts when the trophies are handed out. The Americans are dangerous at all times, and they’ve been one of Germany’s toughest opponents for as long as anyone can remember," declared OC President Steffi Jones, whose playing career included a spell in the US pro league with Washington Freedom.

The match will be an acid test for Germany in more ways than one, as it will be the first high-profile fixture at the brand new Augsburg stadium in the build-up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011™. "Two world-class teams, a state-of-the-art World Cup Arena and a very special atmosphere at the stadium befitting world champions – it’s a glittering prospect for the Augsburg crowd and the women’s game as a whole. I’m absolutely certain the city and this football-crazy region will rise to the challenge," said the 111-time Germany international.
