Asian contenders taking shape

Four of the five contenders for the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015 from Asia have been confirmed, with Japan, Australia, China PR and Korea Republic set to appear at the tournament.

The quartet booked their place at the global showpiece after sealing the top two spots in their groups at the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2014 in Vietnam, progressing into the semi-finals of the eight-team competition.

Group B duo China and Korea Republic were the first to seal their passage to Canada 2014, tallying an impressive 26 goals between them across their meetings with both Thailand and Myanmar to secure the qualification places with a game to spare.

After a pulsating opening-day 2-2 draw, Australia and Japan needed to wait a little longer to be sure of progress, with the pair each dispatching the hosts and Jordan in their final two group games. Those results mean the Nadeshiko could reclaim the Women's World Cup title they won at Germany 2011, while the Matildas remain in the hunt to win back-to-back continental titles after victory in China back in 2010.

The final place in Canada will be decided in a play-off for fifth place at the tournament between hosts Vietnam and one of Thailand or Myanmar.
