Three Germans have won the Nobel Prize for literature since its inception in 1901. Following in the footsteps of Thomas Mann (1929) and Heinrich Boll (1972), the 1999 honour was bestowed on Gunter Grass, "whose frolicsome black fables portray the forgotten face of history."
