Germany and France confirmed their presence in the Women's Olympic Football Tournament at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics as two of the best European teams in the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015™. Germany had missed the last edition in London 2012, while France were beaten by Canada in the bronze medal match.

Canada 2015 serves as the qualification for Rio 2016 where the top three European teams will qualify for next summer's showcase. With Norway's loss to England in the Round of 16, Germany and France have confirmed their place as two of the top teams.

Since the results from the Women's World Cup do not clearly identify the third best team from Europe, a play-off with the remaining teams, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland, will take place. UEFA will host a mini-tournament where six matches will be played during the FIFA women's international match date from 29 February to 9 March 2016.

Note: England do not participate in the Olympics, rather the United Kingdom competes at the Summer and Winter Games, so the Three Lionesses do not count in the qualification rankings for Rio 2016.
