New Zealand have taken a huge step towards booking a place at the London 2012 Olympics women’s football tournament after beating Papua New Guinea 8-0 in Whangarei.

The Football Ferns dominated the first leg of the OFC Women’s Qualifier final, scoring four times in either half, to move within all but a miracle of making their second successive summer games.

Hannah Wilkinson opened the scoring on six minutes after combining with Abby Erceg, before captain Rebecca Smith, Sarah Gregorious and Amber Hearn added three more before the interval.

The visiting side held out until just past the hour mark when Rosie White got the first of a brace. Ria Percival struck ten minutes later before White and Hearn claimed a second each in the closing minutes.

The score could have been even greater were it not for some dogged defending from Papua New Guinea, and they will host New Zealand for the return leg in Port Moresby on Tuesday.
