Italy's 1982 FIFA World Cup™-winning full-back Antonio Cabrini was appointed coach of the Italian women's team on Monday.

The 54-year-old, who had a stellar playing career with Juventus, winning six Serie A titles as well as the 1985 European Cup, replaces Pietro Ghedin, who ended a seven-year spell in charge to go off and become the coach of the Maltese men's team.

Cabrini, who failed to shine as coach of three lower-league Italian clubs and has lately been working as a television football pundit, will take charge of the team for the first time for their UEFA EURO 2013 qualifier against Macedonia in Turin.

Italy are currently top of their group with seven wins from seven matches.
