Mexican football is entering a new era this year. The inaugural season of the country's new professional women's league will get underway in September and, as an appetiser and dress rehearsal ahead of the big kick-off, a total of 12 clubs are set to contest a cup competition, the Copa de la Liga MX Femenil, from 3 to 6 May at the headquarters of the Mexican Football Association (FMF).

"I want to thank the clubs for their commitment to the cause and sense of responsibility regarding the development of Mexican football, because ever since we decided to embark on this project, they have approached the process of putting together their teams, including holding trials, with the utmost rigour and professionalism. The aim is to develop the big stars of the future and to fuel passion among all of our fans," said the Executive President of Liga MX, Enrique Bonilla, during the draw for the group stage.

Group 1: Toluca, Pachuca, Monarcas Morelia, Chivas Group 2: Monterrey, Pumas, Tigres, America Group 3: Xolas, Santos Laguna, Cruz Azul, Necaxa

The competition format is as follows: each team will take on the other three sides in their group. The results from these matches will be reflected in a single overall table, with the top two facing off for the trophy in the final on 6 May at the FMF stadium.

The Mexican women's national team have already made their mark on the international stage with their appearances at the FIFA Women's World Cup™, the Olympic Games and intercontinental competitions. The hope is that the existence of professional domestic tournaments will act as a springboard, taking the female game to the next level in the country by giving players the chance to train and compete regularly without heading abroad.

"There is an abundance of talent, but before we didn't have the structure to support all of that talent. Now there is a competitive structure in place, which is something we had long been waiting for, and so we're really happy and excited," said Santos Laguna ambassador and spokeswoman Laura Irarragorri after the draw.

Two matches from the cup will be streamed live every day on the Liga MX Femenil website, where fans will also be able to follow the key incidents across the rest of the games.
