As the world of football counts down to the reveal of the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019™ official emblem and slogan – in Paris on 19 September – we are counting down the 10 Most Memorable Moments in FIFA Women's World Cup history.

The background After an odyssey spanning many years, the stage was set for the first queens of world football to finally be crowned. The maiden edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup was held in China in 1991 and some 63,000 fans packed out the Tianhe Stadium in Guangzhou to watch USA and Norway do battle for the title on 30 November.

Why so special? It took Michelle Akers 20 minutes to put the USA ahead, rising to emphatically open the scoring in the final with a bullet header, as seen above. However, Linda Medalen levelled just nine minutes later and it looked for all the world like extra time was on the cards until Akers struck again in the 78th minute. With just 120 seconds left on the clock (Women's World Cup matches lasted 80 minutes back then) and the score locked at 1-1, the American displayed all her mettle and her predatory instincts to chase down Norway defender Tina Svensson, pounce on her under-hit back-pass and finish with aplomb. This strike ensured that the Stars and Stripes became the first team to lift the much-coveted crown.

What she said "I'd never seen a men's World Cup match before, not even on TV. I didn't really know what it was all about. As far as I was concerned, it was just a tournament that I wanted to win. We didn't have the sense that we were doing something historic or anything like that," said Akers of the moment when she notched the winning goal. "We didn't know whether there'd be another Women's World Cup or not either, but I understood what it meant to represent my country and wear that jersey. It was a feeling of utter pride."
