FIFA U-20 World Cup record
Korea Republic have qualified for this competition 13 times, and their best result to date was a fourth place finish in Mexico 1983. Eight years later at Portugal 1991, Korea Republic and Korea DPR fielded a united team that advanced to the quarterfinals, a feat Korea Republic reproduced in more recent times at Egypt 2009 and Turkey 2013. In the latter tournament, a side led by midfielders Ryu Seungwoo and Kwon Changhoon defeated Colombia on penalties in the round of 16. A semi-final berth was denied them by regional rivals Iraq, who defeated them on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
The road to Korea Republic
Korea Republic automatically qualify as the host country, but they participated in the Asian qualification tournament, the AFC U-19 Championship, and failed to progress past the group stage.
Shin Taeyoung took charge of the country's U-20 side after leading his country to the quarter-finals at the Men's Football Tournament at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. A long-time attacking midfielder with Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, he went on to coach the club to a 2010 AFC Champions League win. Shin has coached Korea Republic's youth national teams since early 2015, so his knowledge of the country's young talent runs deep.
12 – Korea Republic have played in the AFC U-19 Championship final 16 times and won it 12 times, making them the tournament’s record title-holder. Bahrain 2016 was their 39th appearance in the competition, which accounts for all but two championships thus far.
