Korea Republic have qualified for this competition 13 times, and their best result to date was a fourth place finish in Mexico 1983. Eight years later at Portugal 1991, Korea Republic and Korea DPR fielded a united team that advanced to the quarterfinals, a feat Korea Republic reproduced in more recent times at Egypt 2009 and Turkey 2013. In the latter tournament, a side led by midfielders Ryu Seungwoo and Kwon Changhoon defeated Colombia on penalties in the round of 16. A semi-final berth was denied them by regional rivals Iraq, who defeated them on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw.
The road to Korea Republic
Korea Republic automatically qualify as the host country, but will nonetheless participate in the Asian qualification tournament, the AFC U-19 Championship.
Ahn Iksoo has coached his country's U-20 side since December 2014. A defender by trade, he played for Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma before earning his coaching license in 1999. In 2007 Ahn took charge of the Korea Republic women’s national team, and led them at the 2008 AFC Women’s Asian Cup. After a two-year tenure, he went on to take the helm of a handful of sides in the K-League, holding managerial positions with FC Seoul (assistant) in 2009, Busan I’Park in 2011, and Seongnam Ilhwa Cheonma in 2013. With Korea’s U-20 side, Ahn has stayed true to his style as a strict disciplinarian who emphasizes tight defensive organization above all else.
12 – Korea Republic have played in the AFC U-19 Championship final 16 times and won it 12 times, making them the tournament’s record title-holder. Bahrain 2016 will be their 39th appearance in the competition, which accounts for all but two championships thus far.
