Peter Taylor has named his provisional 35-man squad for the upcoming FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The majority of the squad have previous experience of representing the Three Lions at youth level but there is a first call-up for Leeds United’s Sam Byram, Newcastle’s Gael Bigirimana, West Brom’s Donervorn Daniels and Tottenham’s Alex Pritchard.

Eight players helped England win the UEFA U-17 Championship in 2010, including the captain Conor Coady and a number of the squad have gained valuable first-team experience, most notably James Ward-Prowse at Southampton.

Taylor said: "There’s players on there like Ross Barkley of Everton, who has played for the first team this year, John Lundstram, who is also at Everton but has been out on loan at Doncaster this year and James Ward-Prowse at Southampton.

"Nathan Redmond of Birmingham has had an outstanding season and is a clever winger. He can play as a number 10, as they call it, also. Sam Byram, everyone thinks he’s going to go to the Premier League. I did speak to Brian McDermott and he’s desperate to keep him. He’s really happy with him.

"And there are players like [Adam] Reach and [Luke] Williams of Middlesbrough, who have had decent seasons in the Championship. So there are players there who have a lot of experience playing with Premier League teams. I am convinced they will have a great experience from this tournament."

Taylor will narrow his squad down to 21 players on Friday 7 June.

The FIFA U-20 World Cup will take place in Turkey between 21 June and 13 July and England have been drawn in Group E alongside Iraq, Chile and Egypt.
