The home favourites did not always hit the heights against their unfancied opponents but goals from the impressive duo of Salih Ucan and Cenk Sahin (2) secured a comfortable victory that leaves Feyyaz Ucar’s side top of Group C. Ucan and Sahin were a constant menace to the El Salvador defence, and they combined to deadly effect after just nine minutes.
Sahin did the approach work, bursting down the right and drilling over a low cross that his team-mate met first time, slotting home powerfully from 14 yards. That goal was no more than Turkey had deserved for an enterprising opening to the match but the chances dried up as the half wore on, with El Salvador proving stubborn and well organised opponents.
However, the hosts all but made sure of the points within a minute of the second half kicking off, and it was the same two players causing the damage. This time, roles were reversed, with Ucan slipping through a defence-splitting pass for Sahin, who skipped round Rolando Morales and side-footed into the empty net.
The right winger’s pace was proving too much for El Salvador’s defence and, with 63 minutes played, he put the outcome beyond any doubt, springing the offside trap and slotting home left-footed inside the far post.Turkey will now expect to face an altogether tougher test when they go up against Colombia on Tuesday, while El Salvador face Australia.
