The AFC U-19 Women's Championship, which was played
between 5-16 October 2007, acted as the qualifying competition for
Chile 2008. Korea DPR, Japan and China secured their places at the
FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup by finishing as the top three
teams.
Sixteen teams participated in the qualifying proccess in
Africa. Nigeria and Congo DR secured the two tickets to Chile 2008
after beating Ghana and South Africa in the second round. The
Falconets defeated Ghana 5-2 on aggregate, while Congo DR lost 3-1
in the first leg against the South Africans only to bounce back
with a 2-0 win at home.
Germany, England, France and Norway booked their place in
Chile 2008when they qualified for the semi-finals of the UEFA U-19
Women's Championship, which was played in Iceland between 18-23
July 2007.
USA and Canada booked CONCACAF's first two places after
advancing to the final of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament in
Puebla, Mexico. A comfortable 4-0 victory over Costa Rica took the
Americans through to the final, while a 2-1 win over Mexico sealed
Canada's place and left the hosts to battle the Costa Ricans
for the final Chile 2008 berth in the third-place play-off.
Ten teams from South America will battle it out from 7-23
March in Porto Alegre and Bage, Brazil. The competing nations are
Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Peru, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia,
Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador.
