Christian Salinas, a young Chilean design student, has won the competition to design the Official Poster for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Chile 2008. The winning design was chosen from a large entry by students from over 50 institutes of higher education in Chile.
"I've been kicking a ball around since I was a boy and been passionate about football for as long as I can remember," he said. "So when I heard about this competition, I immediately decided to take part. My sister plays football, so I know quite a bit about the women's game. I wanted to combine my love for football with that of impressionism, which explains the lines of my poster."
It was to prove a winning idea for Christian, a second-year student in Design in Visual Communication at the Metropolitan University of Technology (UTEM) in the country's capital Santiago, with the 21-year-old taking first place in the nationwide competition organised by the Chile 2008 Local Organising Committee in conjunction with Sony Chile.
More than 200 entries were deposited in collection boxes in Sony shops between Iquique and Puerto Montt, and for Janine Cooper, head of Advertising and Marketing for Sony Chile, choosing a winner was far from easy. "To be honest, we found all the posters to be very creative. There were many very good entries, but we chose this one because it represents women very well and also suggests movement. It a little different from what we normally see and very creative," said Cooper, who also stressed how well the poster would represent the fiesta of football Chile would be putting on between 19 November and 7 December this year.
As the winner of the competition, Christian receives a Sony VAIO laptop computer, two tickets (Andes Category) for matches at the host city of his choice and $500 USD spending money. Special mention also goes to runners-up Pavel Sepulveda (28 years old), Andrea Alejandra Fuentes (22) and Luis Reyes (22), all deserving recipients of a Cyber-Shot camera and two Galeria Category tickets for matches at the Host City of their choice.
