The most well-known of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2010 ambassadors is children's TV presenter Shary Reeves, herself a former women's Bundesliga regular. Her passion for the game and close involvement with young people are key tools in raising the public profile of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. Shary Reeves is also a member of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 "First XI for 2011", a team of eleven well-known female personalities committed to publicising the 2011 finals in all areas of society.
The team of ambassadors for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2010 also includes former Germany internationals Sandra Minnert, Renate Lingor, Britta Carlson and Silke Rottenberg, and Paralympics gold medallist Manuela Schmermund.
The ambassadors' role is to boost awareness of the women's game in society at large, joining president Steffi Jones to give the 2010 tournament its human face. They are promoters and publicists for the event in a broad spectrum of roles, from photo shoots with the German national team via appearances in image films to representing the German FA (DFB) at the launch of new playing facilities.
The ambassadors are the living embodiment of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. All boast outstanding records of achievement in the women's game, and thus rank as role models for a younger generation.
Shary Reeves was never capped by the national team but enjoyed a successful playing career in the women's Bundesliga with SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. She is currently a well-known and popular children's TV presenter, having previously worked as an actress and a musician.
After 147 appearances and 16 goals for Germany in 15 years, Sandra Minnert announced her international retirement on 1 November 2007. The former world-class defender was unveiled as a FIFA Women's World Cup ambassador at the ceremonial opening of the OC office on 25 January.
Gifted former FFC Frankfurt midfielder Renate Lingor, nicknamed Idgie by her team-mates, is a another member of the exclusive "Top 100" club of Germany internationals, and featured together with Minnert in the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup-winning squads.
Alongside her duties as a FIFA Women's World Cup ambassador, former international and VfL Wolfsburg captain Britta Carlson remains active in the game as the Wolves' assistant coach.
Silke Rottenberg, long-serving Germany goalkeeper and a FIFA Women's World Cup winner in 2003 and 2007, joined the team of FIFA Women's World Cup ambassadors in January 2009. Three-time Paralympics medal winner Manuela Schmermund completes the team supporting OC President Steffi Jones.
