Goal of the Tournament

Yorely Rincon’s individual class and superb shooting ability combined to produce the best goal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2010, according to FIFA.com users.

In our poll asking you to name the Goal of the Tournament, the 17-year-old’s stunning long-range effort in her Colombia side’s 2-0 victory over Sweden attracted 1,667 votes. In the move leading up to the opening goal of the quarter-final, Rincon created a shooting position for herself with a typical shimmy and burst to leave her marker dumbfounded. The player emerged as one of the key figures in a commendable maiden tournament appearance for the Colombians, who finished fourth overall.

The striker’s wonder goal finished ahead of another long-range thunderbolt, a free-kick struck by Nigeria’s Helen Ukaonu. Ukaonu’s goal, which received 1,270 of the votes cast, was the Falconets’ equaliser in the 1-1 quarter-final draw with holders USA. Nigeria eventually won the tussle on penalties and advanced all the way to the final.

Third spot in the Goal of the Tournament poll went to Germany’s Alexandra Popp, who scored 1,180 votes for her spectacular opener in the final. The host nation ultimately beat the Falconets 2-0, with Popp going on to collect both major individual awards, the adidas Golden Boot and Golden Ball.
