Costa Rica and Russia played out an enthralling 1-1 draw in Concepcion as Group E's first game victors shared the spoils. Sergio Ramirez made amends for his first-half penalty miss by putting the Central Americans in front in the second period, but Fedor Chalov grabbed a poacher's finish, his second of Chile 2015, to secure a point.

Kevin Masis, the star of the opening game against South Africa, earned Los Ticos the penalty after he was pulled back by Alexey Tataev. Rodriguez stepped up, but his effort was well saved by Aleksandr Maksimenko, who also saved a penalty in his side's UEFA EURO U-17 quarter-final earlier this year.

Ivan Galanin and Chalov combined well to apply pressure to the Costa Ricans throughout the rest of the first half as the Russians took the ascendency, but Alejandro Barrientos in the Ticos goal was equal to several efforts on goal.

Barlon Sequiera found Maksimenko in inspired form after a nice one-two saw him into the Russian penalty area, the Spartak Moscow stopper tipping over the bar.

Ramirez then made amends with a straightforward finish, after Sequeira played across the box and Andrei Zakharov slipped, it was a simple left-footed effort that flew past Maksimenko.

Russia struck back, Chalov on hand to fire home after Barrientos had parried Alexander Lokomovitskiy’s effort into his path.

The draw sees both sides onto four points heading into the final matches, with Russia staying in Concepcion to face South Africa and Costa Rica heading south for their final pool match against Korea DPR.
