Paraguay have kicked-off their 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup campaign with a confident 3-1 win over Syria in Puerto Montt.
The Asian representatives were energetic throughout backed by a noisy band of supporters, but Paraguay had too much class and held a 2-0 lead at the break thanks to two goals in a four-minute spell.
All the significant goalscoring opportunities went the way of Paraguay in the opening stanza, with Julio Villalba pinging a shot against the crossbar after ten minutes.
Jorge Morel opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after pushing home a Sergio Diaz cross. And Villalba doubled the advantage four minutes later, this time with Morel providing the assist.
Syria, to their credit, played with renewed spirit after the interval and, after creating several half-openings, Anas Aji pulled a goal back midway through the second period having run onto a long ball and converting with a confident finish.
But Diaz hit the crossbar almost immediately at the other end, and Josue Colman then restored the advantage to halt the Syrian comeback.
Substitute Carlos Ferreira iced the cake with a fourth in the dying moments, to leave Paraguay well placed in a Group F which also includes France and New Zealand.
