Germany coach Steffen Freund
We didn’t start the match well. The Ecuadorians were well organised and they went close to taking the lead a few times. Luckily for us we managed to get in front, and when they equalised we showed a lot of character. This is a typical Germany team: brave, passionate and tightly knit. I’m very proud of what my players have achieved. They’ve sent a serious warning to our rivals, although there’s no question of us getting carried away. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal.

That’s football. You have to learn to accept defeats like this. We came up against top-class opposition and though we started well, we couldn’t make the most of our chances, unlike Germany. We kept pushing forward after we conceded the second, but things got a lot harder after the third. Losing like this is hard to swallow – that goes without saying. But we still have everything to play for and there are still six points at stake. Our job now is to lift the players again.
