Netherlands-Slovakia: Quotes

Bert van Marwijk, Netherlands coach
We played well for the first half-hour. We were good at the start of the second half too, but we failed to add a second goal. Maarten Stekelenburg then saved us twice at a very important time. It's obviously fantastic to have Robben come back after injury and show that he’s already fit enough to be scoring that kind of goal.

Vladimir Weiss, Slovakia coach
The Netherlands were tough opponents. We were courageous and we threw our hearts into it. We’re proud we made it into the last sixteen, but the better team is through to the next round. The penalty at the end will lighten the mood a little on the plane home.

Arjen Robben, Netherlands, Budweiser Man of the Match
It's a tremendous result, but that wasn’t exactly our best performance. Winning was the most important thing. We’ve yet to turn in anything close to a perfect performance. Everyone thinks we’ll play Brazil now, but Chile have a great team too. We’re delighted to be through, but I think we’ll have to improve for the quarter-finals. If it’s Brazil, it’ll need to be a little bit better than today. I’m very pleased with my own display. I’m not 100 per cent fit yet, but it was good enough for today.

Mark van Bommel, Netherlands midfielder
We should have made it two after the break, because it would have been game over at that point. Arjen is a terrific player and extremely valuable to the team. The goal was very similar to many of his goals for Bayern.

Joris Mathijsen, Netherlands defender
There was a period in the second half when we went right off the boil. We were far too content just to knock it around at the back, but we picked up the pace again after about 70 minutes. I’m hoping we’ll turn in a better performance in our next match, but first, we’ll stop and celebrate being through to the next round. This game could be a turning point. All credit to Maarten [Stekelenburg], you feel very secure as a defender with him behind you, and he’s a worthy successor to Edwin van der Sar.

Robert Vittek, Slovakia forward
We’re going home proud and with our heads held high. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, not just today, but from the first to the last match. We’re winners to the people of Slovakia, and I hope we feel able to celebrate. I’m personally pleased because I’ve shown the world I have goals in me.
