Barnetta: Lack of quality cost us

Switzerland and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta says the nation were not good enough to progress to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup™.

Ottmar Hitzfeld's side are going home following the 0-0 draw against Honduras last night at the Free State Stadium. Yet the Swiss got off to a perfect start in Group H by beating reigning European champions Spain.

However Hitzfeld saw his side tumble at the next hurdle after Valon Behrami's red card against Chile. It meant they needed to beat Honduras by two goals to advance in the tournament but it was a task that proved beyond them.

Barnetta said: "I really don't know what was wrong with us. We battered away at them, but we couldn't find the killer pass. We all need to take a good, hard look at ourselves, because we need to be making more chances against a team like Honduras. They have a few problems in defence but our final passes were poor, so we did not deserve to go through."

That theme was echoed by Hakan Yakin, who added: "We sensed a little bit of tension in the dressing room before the game but we were a long way from buckling under the pressure.

"We knew exactly what we had to do in order to get through, but unfortunately it's not worked out. It's not that we were simply unlucky. We've come up short due to our own limitations."
