Oscar Tabarez, Uruguay coach
If look at what Uruguayan national teams have done at recent World Cups, we can’t be anything but totally satisfied. It was clear over the course of the first phase that we’re tough opponents for anybody. Our next opponents? It seems quite unlikely that it’ll be Argentina, but we’ll have to wait and see. The most important thing is that we did our best.
Javier Aguirre, Mexico coach
The team were a bit tense when they took the field today. I don’t know why, but we have to work on that. We weren’t looking for the draw, we were trying to win the game. But then they scored and we couldn’t quite get ourselves going. I think that overall, Uruguay deserved to win the game.
Diego Forlan, Uruguay forward
We’re pleased with the win, but what really matters is that we went through in first place in the group. It wasn’t an easy game by any means. Mexico keep the ball well and to tell you the truth they made life very difficult for us today. Fortunately we struck at the right time, just before the interval, and that gave us the composure we needed to see out the game.
Luis Suarez, Uruguay forward
I’m really happy, especially because I scored my first World Cup goal. It’s an incredible feeling! As far as the result goes, we achieved what we set out to do, which was to qualify. It doesn’t matter now who our next opponents are: we’ve got what it takes to keep progressing in the competition.
Giovani Dos Santos, Mexico forward
Uruguay set their stall out well. They were looking for the draw but fortunately for them they managed to grab a goal. After that they defended and held on for the win. We were trying to win the game but that’s football. We’ve got a lot of things to work on. It’s vital for us to set the record straight as a team from now on.
Rafael Marquez, Mexico defender
We’re hurting after this game and this result. We’re left with a sour taste in our mouths. It’s true that we’ve qualified and that’s the most important thing, but we need to go over all the errors we made today. It’ll be crucial to work hard and improve ahead of what’s to come.
