Alexis Mendoza, Honduras assistant coach
We didn’t make a very good start. We were hoping to come out of the game well but we knew we were up against a great team. We wanted to play our own game in midfield and win the ball from them so we could have it ourselves. But we just couldn’t manage it because they kept overlapping down the flanks. We improved after the break but we didn’t do much up front and though we made the odd chance, it's goals that count at the end of the day. Chile deserved their win but we’ll be looking to improve and put on a good show against Spain.
Marcelo Bielsa, Chile coach
I think it was the right result. We played well, we never sat on our lead and they didn’t make us suffer. We attacked well although we could have had a few more goals, and that might work against us in the final reckoning. Honduras have had a lot of problems with the availability of some of their key players and they weren’t able to play the way they would have wanted to. Against Switzerland it will be interesting to see how difficult they make it for us to win the ball back and create attacking opportunities. Every game is a new test.
Sergio Mendoza, Honduras defender
I feel bad about the goal because I didn’t clear the ball away. I don’t think it’s a fair result because their goal had a touch of fortune about it. They didn’t make any more chances after that and though we had some important players out we never let our heads drop. We are mentally strong and we are ready for our next two opponents. They are tough teams but it’s not impossible for us.
Jean Beausejour, Chile forward and Budweiser Man of the Match
It wasn’t a great game but it was very exciting and we were able to run off our nerves and anxiety. It was important for us to win against awkward opponents. They play a simple game. They don’t mess around when it comes to clearing the ball and that disrupts your rhythm. But thanks to God we were able to get the result, and I’d like to dedicate it to my family and my wife.
Carlos Pavon, Honduras forward
It was a keenly contested match and we are happy with ourselves because we did a good job and our attitude was positive. The goal we conceded was unlucky too, but we’ve still got two games left and we’re still confident of doing well.
Claudio Bravo, Chile goalkeeper
We overpowered them in every department but we can’t start dreaming of the second round yet. Playing in the World Cup is a new experience and we have to keep our feet on the ground. It was important to win after a wait of nearly 50 years. That was something we wanted to put right.
