Matjaz Kek, Slovenia coach
It's an indescribable feeling, but this is sport. Of course we're disappointed but I hope in time my players can focus on what they've achieved. I congratulate my team and England. I hope England will win the World Cup now. England played well but at the end we could have got a draw, but sport is like that, very unpredictable. I hope these players will be role models for those who might play for Slovenia in the future. They are maturing a lot and they will come to a point where they will play their best. We have created huge potential and it's up to us to use it. We need to benefit from this.

Fabio Capello, England coach
This was the team that I know. We played together with spirit; we fought together and I am really, really happy with the result. I’m also happy that I re-found the team that I knew from the qualifiers. This team can go forward now. All the team the coaches; our minds are free. We can go forward without fear, without everything. I’m happy for the fans.

Marko Suler, Slovenia defender
I think we played quite well. We had our chances, but didn’t score – and England scored from one of theirs. I’m pleased that we kept a big team like England on its toes for the 90 minutes; we just didn’t have any luck. We just can’t believe USA scored in added time. However, we are a young team – and I’m sure that we’ll bounce back. We have more big tournaments left in us and this experience will help.

Jermain Defoe, England forward
Everyone was focused before the game and we approached it differently. The lads were fired up, in the first ten minutes we wanted to put them under pressure. As for the goal, I'm lost for words to be honest. What a moment! It was something I’d dreamed of as a kid. I had a chance for another early in the second half which I missed – that was disappointing, but the main thing was the team. We won the game; we’re through now, so I’m delighted. It was a must win game, a cup final.

Steven Gerrard, England midfielder
We thoroughly deserve to go through. I thought all the players that started the game and all the subs were terrific today. We need to find consistency now in the knock-out stages. I think if we play like we did today and keep listening to the manager and keep delivering what he's asking we've got the quality you need to win football matches, anything can happen. If we turn up and we play close to our potential we are a match for anyone.
