Joachim Low, Germany coach
The last match at a tournament is always important, because it shapes the feelings you take home with you. After tonight, we’re not going home empty-handed. My team deserved to win, based on the second half alone. We played well and fought hard. Taking the tournament as a whole, my team has been magnificent. Just looking at the way they’ve put a bitter defeat to Spain behind them, their performance as a whole at the finals, and the number of goals they’ve scored, you have to be delighted. We can go home now feeling justifiably proud.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Germany captain
We’re delighted we’ve rounded off the tournament with a win, although you can’t help thinking about what might have been. We’re still a little bit disappointed about the semi-final, but fortunately we’ve won tonight. It was important, for us, and for our fans in Germany. We were 2-1 down but we’ve turned the game round, and that shows real strength of character. I’ll always be proud of being part of this team at this tournament.

Hans-Jorg Butt, Germany keeper
I think Germany can be really excited about this national team. This team has a great deal of potential, and could win trophies in the years to come. Best of luck to all the lads. The World Cup’s been a terrific experience for me. It's been hugely enjoyable.

Sami Khedira, Germany midfielder
We’d set our sights higher than this, but at the end of the day, the third-place play-off is another important game, and our aim was to win it. I think it was clear to everyone watching that we gave it everything we had and were utterly determined to win. We need time to reflect on what’s happened at the tournament, but at the end of the day, this is a very, very young team. We’ve certainly laid down a marker, but we all want more, and I think we have it in us to win things in the coming years.

Oscar Tabarez, Uruguay coach
We’ve proved we can hold our own against any side in the world. These teams are the best around and Germany have played as well as anyone at this tournament. Sadly we made a lot of mistakes in both areas today and you pay for that in football. That said, I thought we dominated the match at various times tonight. After all, we couldn’t just come here and play defensively. We took risks and we lost but we gave a really good account of ourselves in doing so. The most important thing about this tournament is that we’ve realised we’re not that far away and that we can come back and try to do even better in the future.

Diego Forlan, Uruguay forward
We’ve got nothing to complain about. Finishing in the top four at the World Cup is incredible, and if you’d given us that result at the start of the tournament, we’d have definitely taken it. We came really close to third place today. We were a goal ahead and playing very nicely but unfortunately for us we couldn’t quite make it. We made a couple of mistakes and the game slipped through our grasp. Even so we’ve enjoyed this experience a lot. We’ve played seven games and we almost reached the Final. All in all it’s been unforgettable.

Jorge Fucile, Uruguay defender
We’re down at how the game turned out because we deserved more against one of the best national teams in the world. They got lucky with the rebounds though, and the game ended up going their way. Man for man I think we’ve been pretty much perfect. We’ve put Uruguay back where she belongs again and we showed we can give as good as we get against what is a very strong side. It’s not all been down to us, though. The Uruguay fans have done their bit by giving us their support.
