Steffi Jones, the President of the Organising Committee for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011, met up with Chilean footballing legend Elias Figueroa on the opening day of her visit to Chile on Wednesday.
The former Germany defender presented her fellow centre-half with a special gift from Franz Beckenbauer, a jersey with the number 2011 on the back. Signed by The Kaiser himself, the shirt also bore the autographs of the two legendary captains of the German national team, Uwe Seeler and Lothar Matthaus.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be visiting Chile and meet a great player like Elias Figueroa. Franz Beckenbauer spoke very highly of him to me," commented Steffi. "It's also great to see Chile working on a very interesting plan for the development of the women's game."
"I would like to thank Franz for this noble gesture," said Figueroa. "The fact it was presented to me by an idol of world football like Steffi Jones makes me even happier."
As well as taking part in a FIFA seminar on the development of women's football at the Chilean Football Association on Wednesday afternoon, Jones was the guest of honour as the national U-15 girls championship got under way, a competition attracting over 100 teams.
On Friday the 2003 world champion will pay a visit to Michelle Bachelet, the President of the Republic of Chile, at the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago.
