The FIFA Women's World Cup 2011™ got off to the perfect start on Sunday with two exciting matches, some great goals and a breathtaking atmosphere in each of the stadiums. FIFA.com users are clearly inspired, with countless comments pouring in over the last few days in response to our 'Have Your Say' question: Who will win the title?
The majority of users across the six FIFA.com language websites seem to agree that hosts and titleholders Germany are hot favourites, with reigning Olympic champions USA and 2007 runners-up Brazil the most likely challengers to Birgit Prinz and Co.'s bid for a third straight title. Other dark horses to emerge from the debate were Japan, Nigeria and Mexico.
German user SGSBVB wrote: "Here in Essen there's a sign which reads 'Third place is for men'. I think the German women will do it." danizgomezz of Colombia took a similar view: "Germany may well win the title again, but the Japanese and the Nigerians might cause a surprise. I hope Colombia have a good tournament." Finndonny from Finland agreed: "It looks as though Germany will play USA in the semi-finals and England will face Brazil. I think Germany will win it in the end. I'd love to say England, but it's just not going to happen!"
Major interest, expert responses
The impressive volume of comments reflects the growing popularity of women's football among fans. There was passion and controversy aplenty as the discussion raged, with the strengths and weaknesses of every team under the microscope. Over 300 users from all over the world sent in their views.
Amayafox15 of the USA gave a particularly detailed analysis of the two-time world champions from her homeland: "With Abby Wambach and Amy Rodriguez up top and Alex Morgan behind we're very strong. Our midfield and defence are solid and our goalkeeper is world-class. Heather O'Reilly is one of the best wingers in the world. Let's see what happens, though!"
Numerous outsider tips
Of course anything can happen in football, so naturally there were also plenty of potential outsiders for the title identified by the FIFA.com users. dieivie8 from Canada wrote: "Equatorial Guinea were a surprise for me. Their players all have Portuguese nicknames, which is a formula for success we've all seen before. Didn't Korea DPR win a junior World Cup a few years ago too?"
espainisbest from Korea Republic believes Mexico could triumph, while RowynNeelam of Mauritius feels Norway will come up trumps. French user Gazprom is expecting a final between USA and France and SmeltzEver from Canada is tipping New Zealand for the title.
Many thanks to all of you who took part in the discussion. We hope you enjoy the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011!
