USA beat Italy to seal final spot

The USA women’s team have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ in Germany after beating Italy 2-0 on aggregate.

Amy Rodriguez scored the winning goal in the 40th minute of today’s second leg in Illinois to seal a 1-0 victory and book the team’s place in the tournament. The Americans won the first leg 1-0 a week ago in Italy.

Despite having won the FIFA Women’s World Cup on two previous occasions, the USA team have struggled during qualification for 2011. They finished third in CONCACAF qualifying behind Canada and Mexico, which forced them into the UEFA/CONCACAF play-off.

The USA are the final team to earn a place at the tournament, for which the draw will take place on Monday in Frankfurt.
