Italy have kept their hope of a place at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011 alive by eliminating Switzerland on Wednesday. The second leg of their two-legged series saw the Italians win out 4-2, making the final aggregate score 5-2 after the 1-0 win on home soil last week.
Patrizia Panico, Elisa Camporese and Elisa Tona did the scoring for the Italians, in a game in which all of the goals came in the second half. Sandy Maendly grabbed both for the Swiss in Aarau.
Italy are joint-11th on the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking and will now go into a final qualification match against the third-placed team from the CONCACAF Zone (to be determined in Cancun, Mexico in the coming weeks) to determine which nation will claim the last remaining spot at Germany 2011. The final play-off will be played over two legs on 20 and 27 November, with the first leg in Italy.
France, Norway, England and Sweden have already secured places alongside the host nation at Germany 2011, which will run from 26 June until 17 July.
