With Germany making it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women's EURO in Finland, the President of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011™ Organising Committee (OC) Steffi Jones was delighted with the performances both of her country and of the host nation.
"It is impressive to see how easily Germany saw off two strong opponents in the shape of Norway and France," said the OC President. "Finland, Denmark and Sweden have also put in some good performances so far and the host nation really gave it their all in making it through to the quarter-finals."
Jones was also delighted with the hospitality which the Finns have been showing. "You can tell that the country is delighted to be hosting the EURO. I've been impressed by the atmosphere at the matches involving Finland which have all been played out in front of 16,000 fans," she said. "Their enthusiasm gives the lie to the myth that Scandinavians can be a little frosty. The German fans also helped to generate a good atmosphere at our matches in Tampere."
As well as watching the matches in Germany's group, the OC President also saw England-Italy in Lahti and Ukraine-Denmark in Helsinki, giving her a good overall impression of the venues and the various teams involved. On Sunday she will be watching Germany's final group match against Iceland in Tampere, but this time in her capacity as a TV pundit for ZDF. On Wednesday 2 September, the head of the OC will then be paying a visit to Wilfried Grolig who is the German ambassador to Finland.
