Lori Chalupny scored the only goal of the game after just 57 seconds - the second-fastest in the 16-year history of the FIFA Women's World Cup - to ensure Greg Ryan's side finished three points clear of section runners-up Korea DPR, who sneaked through to the last eight on goal difference despite losing 2-1 to Sweden. A long ball forward was flicked on by Abby Wambach into the path of the USA No17, who stole in front of her marker to slot the ball home.
Rain poured down for much of the game and with the surface making passing the ball difficult, USA's aerial prowess looked like their most likely avenue of success. As the game progressed, however, Nigeria began to look more and more lively, with their speed on the counter-attack causing the US defence problems.
Ultimately, though, late saves from both goalkeepers kept the
scoreline at 1-0.
