Yuki Nagasato struck in added time to earn Japan a 1-0 victory
over Argentina in their Group A meeting at the Shanghai Hongkou
Football Stadium.
Just as against England in their opening fixture, Japan left
it late, Nagasato pouncing to score after Argentina goalkeeper
Romina Ferrero had parried a low drive from Yukari Kinga.
The victory gives Japan four points and real hope of reaching the
quarter-finals but confirms Argentina's elimination after two
defeats.
Although Argentina captain Eva Gonzalez turned a low cross
against her own post in the third minute, for long spells
thereafter it looked like the South Americans would frustrate Japan
and claim their first point at the FIFA Women's World Cup.
Indeed they nearly stole in front when midfielder Fabiana Vallejos
struck the woodwork with an ambitious 30-yard lob in the 73rd
minute.
Japan will hope to complete the job of qualifying in their
final group fixture against Germany in Hangzhou on Monday.
Argentina face England in Chengdu on the same day.
